Persons wishing to offer comments are encouraged to submit written testimony at least 24-hours prior
to the meeting indicating:

Approval of Regular Open Session Minutes of May 18, 2011. Ms. Bothe moved to approve the
Minutes minutes as circulated; Ms. Carvalho

Presentation Representative Ms. Blu Dux from the organization "Women Speaking to Power" providing an over view of the organization's mission and purpose.
Ms. Blu Dux began by thanking the members for giving her the opportunity to speak
about her organization. She was accompanied Ms. Mary Stone. In sharing her history
of how the organization first started, Ms. Dux included that another reason for being
here is to request support on the organization's future events. Although the committee
mm cannot provide any kind of financial sort, their wjttin6Tess

to support the organization by collaborating at next year's Women History Month
event.

■ Update fi-oni members on the following planned events:
a) Essay Contest
Chair Castor stated that she and Ms. Carvalho would be taping the Mayor's show, on
June 16"' at 10:30 a.m. to promote the essay contest and provide an overview of the
committee's purpose. Accompanying them is former Kauai High student Ms. Valerie
Ganiban. Ms. Ganiban attended the Governor's International Women's Leadership
conference on O'ahu in 2009. Ms. Ganiban will be speaking about her experience at
the conference,
b) September Women's Health Month
Chair Castor stated that everything is coming together for this event. The guest
presenters were contacted and both have committed their time, still pending is the
Zumba dancing presentation. Ms. Carvalho indicated that she would still need to
contact the,Zomba people. Ms. Bothe said that will be doing a cooking demonstration
just like last year but has not decided on the dish.
c) October Breast Cancer Awareness Month
Ms. Battad introduced Ms. Susan Oshiro of the American Cancer Society. Ms. Oshiro
has committed the support of the ACS for the event. There were discussions on where
to start and finish the mini-walk-a-than. One suggestion was to walk from the county
building to Wilcox Hospital. To get the best exposure Ms. Carvalho suggested that the
sign holding should be on the Westside of the Mo'ikeha Building(Round Building) in
the triangle. Ms. Battad said that she would love to see those participating in the event
wear the color pink to symbolize not just breast cancer but other cancers as well.
Ms. Battad stated she that more discussion is needed to find a date and time that would

Dear Ulu,
Please accept this as formal notice of my resignation from the volunteer position serving the
Commission on the Status of Women, effective July 1, 2011.
Volunteering for the County has been a great privilege for me and has been a wonderful
experience to help the Kauai's women.
I appreciate both the professional and personal growth opportunities that have been provided
to me during my time with commission. I would like to thank you in particular for all your advice
and support. I will continue to attend meetings and provide updates from the State's
Commission on the Status of Women.
