Women 's Health Month
Overview
September is Women's Health Month in Hawaii. Women's Health Month was initiated in 1994 by the
HSCSW. The purpose of Women's Health Month is to maximize public awareness of women's health issues,
empower women to be their own health advocates, reduce health care disparities, and promote the physical and
emotional well-being of women in Hawaii. For the 14th year the Hawaii State Commission on the Status of
Women is organizing Women's Health Month.
The goal of Women's Health Month is to widely communicate that women's health is more than the
absence of disease: it encompasses physical, mental, emotional and social well-being. The month of events
include educational workshops, health fairs, lectures, fitness activities and other special events.
The Women's Health Month Calendar of events (containing more than two hundred events) in the
Honolulu Advertiser's annual Body &Mind edition was published in the Women's Health Month section. In
the past, the community has supported the Commission's priority of Improved Women's Health and Wellness
by scheduling an event almost every day in September. In addition to the annual calendar the Commission will
sponsor a series of wellness focused events throughout the month.

Hawaii Tf omen 's History Month &
Oral History Collection
"Orgill history is a method of gathering and preserving historical information through recorded interviews of
people about past events and ways of life", according to the Oral History Association."
Overview
The Hawaii State Commission on the Status of Women, works to commemorate national Women's
History Month in March of each year. In March of 2006, will began collecting interviews to establish the
Hawaii Women's Oral History Collection. The official opening of the collection, making it available to the
public, was the Women's History Month Reception, on March 22, 2007. The theme for Women's History
Month that year was Generations of Women Moving History Forward and we honored Dr. Donnis Thompson
for her work in crafting the women's sports program at the University of Hawaii and with her support of the
establishment of Title 9. The March 2008 event had the theme of Women's Art: Women's Vision and honoree
long-time art advocate Indru Watumull. The March 2009 theme is Women Taking the Lead to Save Our Planet
and will honor committed environmentalist Donna Wong. The goal of the collection is to collect the women's
stories in their own voices. To have them tell their own stories, enabling them to speak to Hawaii's future,
sharing their wisdom and knowledge. We hope the women's community will embrace the Hawaii Women's

• Domestic Violence Prevention Month flamer— Instead of doing the mail
ads,—would you consider running the county committee on the status of
women Teen Dating Violence PSA again? The Committee lost a
significant amount of funding for the next fiscal year, but loves the PSA. It
paid $3,000 in the Spring to run the ad across the entire island and on
every station. However, if the Commission is interested in fun * this, the
spots can be run on the 2 most popular stations for about r,500 This ad
would also coincide with the YWCA's local version of Walk a' i e in Her
Shoes, in addition, to the County's Family Violence Interagency
Committee needing help getting the radio as on prevention out to the
community.
c,3 The Committee was very happy to hear that the
Commissioners wanted to have the teen dating violence ad
shared with the other committees and UH Radio.
c-,3 The YWCA's local version of Walk a Mile in Her Shoes is
also looking for some funding, but I think we can fold
promotion of their event with the Teen Dating Violence Ad.
