Also present: Deputy County Attorney Andrea Suzuki; Board & Commissions Office Staff: Support Clerk Mercedes Youn Invited guests: Savita Agarwal and Leo Azambuja Excused Jade Battad, Member and Lisa Ellen Smith, Ex- Officio Absent SUBJECT DISCUSSION ACTION Call To Order Chair Carvalho called the meeting to order at 5:05 p.m. Managing Ms. Nakamura began by thanking the Committee for volunteering their time Director Nadine to serve on the Committee on the Status of Women. She shared with the Nakamura members that plans are being made to possibly host a "Brown Bag" luncheon for all County employees. The intent is to invite a guest speaker to talk about a specific topic that would help enhance the quality of life for its employees and provide information that is practical and useful. Approval of Regular Open Session Minutes of March 12, 2104 Minutes Chair Carvalho asked to defer this item due to recording difficulties. Budget Report The budget for fiscal year 2013 -14 reflected a total expense of $1,296.15 on current with a remaining balance of $703.85. expenditures and balance for Ms. Trinidad moved to receive the budget report fiscal year 2013- for fiscal year 2013 -14 as submitted. Ms. Lasker 14 seconded the motion. Motion carried 5:0 Committee on the Status of Women Regular Meeting - Open Session April 16, 2014 Page 2 SUBJECT DISCUSSION ACTION CSW 2013 -29 Discussion on continued recruitment for the Committee on the Status of Women. As part of its efforts to recruit more members, Chair Carvalho asked Staff to keep item CSW 2013 -39 on the agenda as a reminder to the members to continue to look for qualified individuals to serve on the Committee on the Status of Women. CSW 2013 -33 Discussion on future Committee events for 2014 including but not limited to: • September's 2014 Health Fair: Plans for the 2014 health Fair are still on -going and the Committee has requested the presence of Theresa Koki at a future meeting to provide the information on the date /time /venue of the event. The Committee discussed various ideas to do at the health fair which include blood pressure checks, flu shots and a healthy cooking demonstration. Ms. Lasker suggested that the Committee hold a drawing for a "Day at Spa ". The Committee talked briefly about asking for funding from the State Commission on the Status of Women for potential projects and programs for fiscal year 2015. Questions were raised as to the steps in the County in accepting funds from the state. Staff informed the Committee to place on the next agenda a separate item to discuss state funding. • Recap of the March Women's History Month event: Chair Carvalho stated that the event was an overwhelming success with close to 100 people in attendance. Ms. Castor stated that The Kauai Museum has offered the Committee the use of their venue to hold more Committee events in the future. Chair Carvalho thanked Committee on the Status of Women Regular Meeting - Open Session April 16, 2014 Page 3 SUBJECT DISCUSSION ACTION the members for their hard work and commitment in putting the event together. • Recap of the pre- screening of the film "Rise of the Wahine" and discussion on holding future events: Chair Carvalho read into the record a note from Ms. Pat Hunter - Williams thanking the Committee for all their hard work and although it wasn't as well attended as she had hoped, the audience was very passionate and that the Director Dean Kaneshiro and Producer Ryan Tsuji were very appreciative. They also reminded the Committee about possible involvement with the screenings once the film is completed in the summer. Chair Carvalho asked what the Committee could do to encourage future public participation for this event. Ms. Lasker shared with the Committee how touched and inspired she was after seeing the film. • Attendance to the 2014 Na Wahine Alaka'i O Kauai "Women's Leaders of Kauai luncheon on Maw Chair Carvalho asked the members who would be available to Vice Chair Ignacio - Neumiller moved to select attend the event. Vice Chair Ignacio - Nuemiller, Sharon Lasker, and approve Chair Carvalho, Vice Chair Ignacio - Liza Cabal Trinidad all indicated that they would be available to Neumiller and members Sharon Lasker, Liza attend the event. Chair Carvalho called for a motion. Cabal Trinidad and Jade Battad to attend this year's event. Ms. Mooy seconded the motion. Motion carried 6:0 Committee on the Status of Women Regular Meeting - Open Session April 16, 2014 Page 4 SUBJECT DISCUSSION ACTION After the motion was made, Staff was instructed to start the process to purchase the tickets to the event. CSW 2014 -01 Discussion and decision - making on the Committee's goals and objectives for 2014. (On- going) Chair Carvalho briefly reminded the members to bring their suggestions to the next meeting for continued discussion. CSW 2014 -03 Discussion and possible decision - making on setting up a free workshop on empowerment coaching on various topics that affect women on a daily basis. Ms. Agarwal reviewed the importance of empowerment coaching and how it would help women uncover their true potential and lead a life that is worth celebrating. She stated that as an Empowerment Coach she could help women transform the road blocks that stand in their way of achieving their goals and dreams. By utilizing the senses, it strengthens the connection to the vision and brings it alive. Ms. Agarwal grew up in India and is a trained scientist. She earned her Master's Degrees in Microbiology and Botany. Her true passion has always been people, and over the years friends and family would frequently turn to her for support and guidance. The Committee thanked Ms. Agarwal for her presentation and informed her that they will contact her in the near future to utilize her services once the Committee determines the event. Committee on the Status of Women Regular Meeting - Open Session April 16, 2014 Page 5 SUBJECT DISCUSSION ACTION CSW 2014 -04 Discussion and possible decision - making on placing a story in the newspaper about the Committee on the Status of Women and to introduce its members. Vice Chair Ignacio - Neumiller, introduced Leo Azambuja Editor for "For Kauai" newspaper to the committee. She stated that Mr. Azambuja is here to assist the committee on placing an article in the newspaper about the programs and events the committee has either sponsored or hosted. She also noted that the article would include a photo and short bio of each member. Vice Chair Ignacio - Nuemiller said that she would work with Mr. Azambuja on the specifics and will keep the members posted on the details as it becomes available. Announcements Next meeting — Wednesday, May 21, 2014 at 5:00 p.m. in the Mo'ikeha Building, Meeting Room 2A /2B. Vice Chair Ignacio - Nuemiller made the following announcements: • The Zonta Club of Kauai will be hosting a "Live Your Dreams and Stay Empowered" event on June 5th at the Regency at Puakea Activities Room starting at 12:00 noon. Life and Empowerment Coach Savita Agarwal will be the featured guest speaker. • It's a Girl Documentary Film will be shown on April 23, 2014 at 6:00 p.m. at the Daniel K. Inouye Tech Center on the KCC Campus. Adjournment At 6:01 p.m. Chair Carvalho declared the meeting adjourned.
