TRANSIT EQUIPMENT MAINTENANCE COORDINATOR 1.512
Duties Summary:
Coordinates the activities related to maintenance of the
County transit vehicle fleet including preventative maintenance,
inspections, repair and maintenance, and acquisition and
replacement of transit equipment; conducts driver training and
safety activities relative to transit support operations; and
performs other related duties as required.
Distinguishing Characteristics:
This class is distinguished by its responsibility to
coordinate activities relative to day -to -day maintenance and
repair operations, and replacement of the County's transit
equipment; preparing equipment specifications; conducting safety
training, and education activities relative to transit support
operations.
Example of Duties:
Coordinates and implements a preventative maintenance
inspection program for fleet vehicles; coordinates activities
relative to the service, repair, overhaul, testing, and
replacement of fleet vehicles in day -to -day operations; reviews
and estimates the cost of maintenance and repair requests;
inspects equipment and road tests vehicles to determine the
nature and extent of damages, and the need and costs of repairs;
monitors the quality of repair work performed on vehicles
repaired and maintained; assists in the conduct of informal bid
purchases of materials, supplies, and services required in repair
and maintenance activities; prepares plans and specifications for
new vehicles and equipment purchases according to agency
guidelines; assist in coordinating the maintenance and repair of
departmental radio - communication equipment; recommends
maintenance and replacement schedules and provides technical
justification for the purchase of new equipment; provides cost
data in preparation of repair and maintenance budget;
participates in developing the expenditure plan and schedule of
maintenance projects; conducts safety inspections and
investigates accidents involving the buses as they pertain to
equipment malfunction and /or failure; conduct safety training and
education activities for drivers on motor carrier and motor
vehicle safety laws and regulations with specific emphasis on the
Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations of the U.S. Department

of Transportation, Federal Highways Administration; plan and
coordinate bus stop locations and improvements to ensure the
overall safety and compliance to related rules and regulations;
demonstrate new products and techniques in maintenance and repair
of transit equipment.
Minimum Qualification Requirements for the Class:
Training and Experience: A combination of education and
experience substantially equivalent to graduation from high
school and four years of inspecting and supervising automotive
repair work, including one year of estimating costs of labor and
materials from automotive repair and maintenance activities, and
training of sufficient scope and quality to competently perform
journeylevel automotive or passenger bus repair work.
License Requirement: Possession of a valid Hawaii State
Motor Vehicle Operator's License and a Commercial Driver's
License with the Passenger (P) endorsement.
Knowledge of: automotive repair work; operation and care of
passenger buses; federal safety regulations of the U.S.
�J Department of Transportation and Federal Highways Administration
rules and regulations; accident hazards and methods of control
and prevention; highway safety as pertains to vehicle operations;
principles and practices of purchasing and inventory control;
inspectional and investigative methods and techniques; report
writing techniques, and word processing.
Ability to: Coordinate equipment maintenance program,
inspect and coordinate the work of others; communicate clearly'
orally and in writing; evaluate operational requirements and
recommend improvements to equipment use and repair; determine
rates, routes, passengers, equipment, and special services to be
provided; explain the purposes and functions of transit equipment
components, and common malfunctions and causes; operate a
computer; prepare clear and concise reports; maintain effective
relationships with others; keep accurate records; investigate and
determine causes of accidents.
Health and Physical Condition Requirements:
Persons seeking appointment to positions in this class must
meet the health and physical condition standards deemed necessary
and proper for the performance of the duties.
