AUTOMOTIVE SERVICES SUPERVISOR 1.514
Duties Summary:
Plans, directs and coordinates the day -to -day
operational activities concerned with the maintenance and
repair of all types of gasoline and diesel driven
automotive, construction and related equipment for the
County's centralized repair shop; performs other related
duties as required.
Distinguishing Characteristics:
This class is distinguished by its responsibility for
planning, directing and coordinating the day -to -day
operational activities of the County's centralized repair
shop.
Examples of Duties:
Plans, assigns, coordinates and measures the work of
several groups of employees engaged in the repair, service,
overhaul and maintenance of automotive, industrial and
construction equipment and ancillary functions for the
repair shop; studies existing and new maintenance practices
on cost and materials use; analyzes operational costs and
assesses needs to recommend purchasing and replacement of
vehicles and equipment; directs and supervises the testing
and inspection of vehicles and equipment to ensure
standards of productivity and quality; oversees purchasing,
dispensing and inventory management activities for parts
and fuel; prepare correspondence and status reports;
maintains or supervises the maintenance of various records
and files; develops and implements a comprehensive
preventive maintenance program for County equipment
utilizing fleet maintenance tracking software; participates
in the development and conduct of employee and fleet safety
training programs; operates a motor vehicle to transport
employees and equipment and to inspect jobs or work in
progress; evaluates employee job performance and counsels
employees as needed; approves /disapproves leave requests
and reviews timesheets for accuracy and conformance with
union contracts and pay regulations; recommends personnel
actions relative to hiring, promotions and transfers;
initiates and recommends disciplinary action.

SUPERVISOR
Minimum Qualification Requirements of the Class:
Training and Experience: A combination of education
and experience substantially equivalent to graduation from
an accredited community college or technical school with
major work in automotive technology or a related field, and
four (4) years of supervisory experience in the
installation, repair, maintenance and overhaul of
automotive and construction equipment.
License Requirement: Possession of a valid Hawaii
State driver's license (Type 3).
Knowledge of: principles and practices of
supervision; theory and principles of gasoline and diesel
engines, methods, equipment and materials used in the
repair, overhaul and testing of a variety of automotive
equipment and their specialized mechanical, electrical or
electronic units; the principles of electricity as applied
to the electrical system of automotive equipment; basic
principles and practices of welding; use of tools,
equipment and materials of the mechanic trade; occupational
hazards and safety practices of the trade; computerized
inventory /maintenance systems and of current trends and
developments in the field.
Ability to: plan assignments; prioritize, direct,
coordinate and review the work of subordinates; establish
policies and work procedures; provide assistance and
training to subordinate staff; diagnose trouble and
mechanical defects in gasoline and diesel driven automotive
equipment; estimate materials, parts and labor necessary to
complete a job; read and interpret work from rough
sketches, blueprints or various manufacturer's manuals;
make working sketches and drawings; maintain records and
prepare reports; encourage safety practices and enforce
safety rules; maintain harmony in work relationships among
workers; effectively use computer applications related to
the work.
Health and Physical Condition Requirements:
Persons seeking appointment to positions in this class
must meet the health and physical condition standards
deemed necessary and proper for performance of the duties.

SUPERVISOR
This is the first specification approved for the new
class AUTOMOTIVE SERVICES SUPERVISOR effective July 3,
2006.
