DEPARTMENTAL PUBLIC RELATIONS SPECIALIST 2.296
Duties Summary:
Implements and conducts informational, educational, and interpretive activities
relating to government functions and programs to provide public relations services for a
major County department; and performs other related duties are required.
Distin uishing Characteristics:
This class is distinguished by its responsibility to execute a variety of public relations
and informational activities relating to government functions and programs of a major
County department.
Examples of Duties:
• Prepares informational material for dissemination to the general public or special
interest groups through various media;
• Gathers information from various sources; selects information to be used;
• Provides information through letters, memos, 'or speech in response to inquires,
news releases, special articles, announcements, departmental publications;
• May write or edit speeches for departmental personnel;
• Facilitates department public relations informational meetings and discussions;
• May be responsible for directing the department's informational services activities
including some administrative housekeeping responsibilities;
• FstahlishPS and maintains Pffecfine working relationships with memherc of Iae
media, community groups, and key individuals in the public and private sector;
• May participate in departmental grant writing activities, including research, writing,
and maintenance of simple to moderately complex grants; assists in the planning of
a department's public relations program, including development and refinement of
policies and procedures for public relations operations;
Assists with exhibits and demonstrations for public display; provides information over
the telephone;
• May speak before small groups;

Relations Specialist
• Serves as departmental liaison with the Public Information Office.
Minimum Qualification Requirements for the Class:
Training and Experience: A combination of education and experience substantially
equivalent to graduation from an accredited college or university with a baccalaureate
degree in journalism, public relations, or a related field and two (2) years of experience in
public relations or journalism work.
License Requirement: Possession of a valid motor vehicle operato-r's license that
may be required for certain positions in this class.
Knowledge of: publicity methods and media; principles and techniques used in
writing informational material; techniques used in preparing and editing copy for printing;
local government organizations and functions; activities and operations of the department in
which the position is located.
Ability to. write and speak effectively; secure, evaluate and present facts accurately
and concisely; work well with people; communicate effectively with various segments of the
public; assist in planning and administering informational programs.
Health and Physical Condition Requirements:
Persons seeking appointment to positions in this class must meet the health and
physical condition standards deemed necessary and proper for performance of the duties.

This is an amendment to the specification for the class, DEPARTMENTAL PUBLIC
RELATIONS SPECIALIST, which was approved on September 29, 1999, and is to be
substituted for that specification.
