Duties Summary:
Plans, supervises, and coordinates the construction and maintenance activities of
an 18 -hole municipal golf course and its facilities; and performs other related duties as
required.
Distiuruishiny, Characteristics:
This class is distinguished by its responsibility for managing the construction of
new areas and preservation of golf course grounds for an 18 -hole municipal golf course.
Examples of Duties:
• Plans work programs, utilizing experience and established agronomic practices,
to improve and maintain turf and playing condition of course;
• Plans new areas or changes in course and directs workers engaged in cultivation,
grading, seeding, and sodding of area;
• Reviews test results of soil and turf samples and directs application of fertilizer,
lime, insecticide and fungicide;
• Tours grounds to ascertain work progress and condition of course;
• Inspects turf to designate height and frequency of mowing, and determine need
for supplemental irrigation to sustain or force growth;
• Makes recommendations and participates in the preparation of the maintenance
operating budget, selection of capital improvement projects, equipment and
supplies;
• Reviews and keeps records of employees, equipment, inventory and schedules;
• Participates in interviews, hiring, and discipline of workers;
• May provide workers with training sessions related to course maintenance; and
• Meets and confers with concerned parties and other governmental, private, civic
and community groups or individuals.

Minimum Qualification Requirements for the Class:
Training and Experience: A combination of education and experience
substantially equivalent to graduation from an accredited four -year college or university
with a baccalaureate degree in turf or plant science, landscape architecture, agronomy,
or a related field, and five (5) years of progressively responsible experience in the field of
turf or plant science, landscape architecture, or agronomy, three (3) of which must have
demonstrated technical knowledge in the application of agronomic practices in the
maintenance and improvement of greens, turf, and fairways, and two (2) of which must
have been in a supervisory or lead capacity.
License Requirement: Possession of a valid motor vehicle operator's license
(Hawai'i Type 3 or equivalent); and Hawaii Certificate for Commercial Applicators of
Restricted Pesticides (Category 3) prior to completion of probationary period.
Knowledge of: agronomic practices for golf course construction and
maintenance; general policies and procedures governing golf course layout and
landscaping; technical practices and methods required to preserve greens and fairways
for proper playing condition; herbicides, insecticides, fertilizers, fungicides; principles
and practices of supervision; budget preparation; report writing; public relations.
Ability to: plan, organize, assign, and review the work of subordinates engaged in
the construction, improvement, and maintenance of a golf course; determine the proper
use of chemicals; supervise the use of herbicides, insecticides, fertilizers, and
fungicides; conduct studies and prepare written reports; keep records; prepare budget
estimates; give clear and concise oral and written instructions; deal tactfully and
effectively with the public and employees.
Health and Physical Condition Requirements:
Persons seeking appointment to positions in this class must meet the health and
physical condition standards deemed necessary and proper for performance of the
duties.
This is an amendment to the specification for the class, DIRECTOR OF GOLF
COURSE MAINTENANCE, which was approved on July 3, 2002, and is to be
substituted for that specification.
