HomeMy WebLinkAbout5.123 MECHANICAL ENGINEER II 20131203DEPARTMENT OF PERSONNEL SERVICES COUNTY OF KAUAI MECHANICAL ENGINEER II 5.123 SR -24, BU -13 Duties Summary: Performs difficult professional engineering work in the design, installation, operation and maintenance of mechanical equipment and systems, and /or in the review and analysis of plans and specifications for mechanical engineering features and compliance with code requirements; and performs other related duties as required. Distinguishing Characteristics: This class differs from the Mechanical Engineer I in that the Mechanical Engineer II performs difficult professional engineering work in the preparation and /or review of a complex and major project or several less complex projects; whereas, the Mechanical Engineer I performs professional engineering work involving projects of a well- defined, routine or uncomplicated nature. This class differs from that of Mechanical Engineer III in that the Mechanical Engineer II is responsible for a complex and major project or several less complex projects; whereas, the Mechanical Engineer III is responsible for a number of complex and major projects operating simultaneously, where the problems of supervision and /or coordination are pronounced. Examples of Duties: (The following are examples of duties and are not necessarily descriptive of any one position in this class. The omission of specific duties statements does not preclude management from assigning such duties if such duties are a logical assignment for the position.) • Makes office and field studies of proposed projects and recommends the design, type, selection and location of equipment to be installed; • Conducts preliminary and final acceptance tests of pumping units; • Conducts periodic tests to determine operational efficiency of existing pumping units and recommends corrective action as required; • Checks plans and specifications of mechanical equipment and appurtenances; • Supervises and compiles pumping and other data; • Analyzes indicator cards of steam engines and makes adjustments as required; • Analyzes station reports and operating schedules; requisitions supplies and equipment; Mechanical Engineer II 2 5.123 • Reviews plans and specifications pertaining to mechanical engineering features for compliance with plumbing, mechanical and other pertinent code requirements; • Analyzes designs of piping, air conditioning, refrigerating, heating and other related systems; • Checks and verifies correctness of calculations, determinations, and assumptions as to requirements, load limits, safety allowances, etc.; • Meets and confers with architects and engineers on matters concerning technical interpretation of codes; • Approves or rejects plumbing permits upon review of designs, plans and specifications; • Serves as consultant to department personnel engaged in the inspection of plumbing construction work; and • Prepares technical reports and correspondence. Minimum Qualification Requirements for the Class: Training and Experience: A combination of education and experience substantially equivalent to graduation from an accredited college or university with a baccalaureate degree in mechanical engineering, and three (3) years of professional mechanical engineering experience. License Requirement: Registration as a professional mechanical engineer in the State of Hawaii. Knowledge of: the principles, practices, methods and techniques of mechanical engineering; engineering mechanics, mechanics of materials, machine design, thermodynamics and hydraulics; basic principles and practices of electrical engineering; principles and methods of conducting a variety of tests on materials and equipment; code requirements as they pertain to mechanical engineering; sources of engineering information. Ability to: apply mechanical engineering principles; interpret, apply and modify a variety of guidelines and precedents to the solution of specific problems; review and analyze plans and specifications pertaining to mechanical engineering features; interpret and apply technical provisions of various cods; prepare engineering reports and correspondence; deal tactfully with engineers, architects and the public. Mechanical Engineer II 3 Health and Physical Condition Requirements: 5.123 Persons seeking appointment to positions in this class must meet the health and physical condition standards deemed necessary and proper for performance of the duties. This is an amendment to the specification for the class, MECHANICAL ENGINEER II, which was approved on December 4, 1981, and is to be substituted for that specification.
