Distinguishing Characteristics: This class differs from that of Engineering Aid III in that the Engineering Aid IV primarily operates a transit and may be occasionally responsible for a field survey party or may perform difficult con- struction inspections and materials testing, whereas, the Engineering Aid III operates a level or acts as a head chainman and may operate a transit as an incidental assignment or for the purpose of learning. This class differs from that of Engineering Survey Party Chief- , in that the Engineering Aid IV operates a transit and may occasionally be assigned field survey responsibility, whereas, the Engineering Survey Party Chief is responsible for a field survey party under the general supervision of a professional surveyor or engineer where the problems of supervision and coordination are pronounced in addition to operating intricate survey equipment and instruments. Examples of Duties: Operates engineering transit in field survey work; locates objects and determines lines, angles, and curves; keeps and reduces field notes; assists engineers in the more precise survey work; computes traverses; computes quantities, areas of cross sections, grades, cuts and fills, and curve data; makes computations to be plotted on semi — logarithmic charts for estimate purposes; inspects water service installations such as checking excavations, cuts and fills, caulking and leading of joints, and lateral connections, and reports discrepancies to engineers; gathers, reports and compiles hydrologic data; makes concrete slump tests and prepares concrete cylinders for laboratory tests; makes routine zoning and highway studies for high level engineers; does plotting and tracings; supervises the work of other engineering aids; supervises the maintenance of field equipment; may occasionally perform drafting work; may .perform difficult construction inspection work. Minimum Qualification Requirements for the Class: Training and Experience: A combination of education and experience substantially equivalent to a high school education with courses in mathematics and three. years of experience in field surveying. ENGINEERING AID IV -2- Knowledge of: mathematics including plane trigonometry as applied to surveys, including traverses, curves, computations of areas, and the use of logarithmic, trigonometric and curve data tables; survey principles and practices as applied to preliminary, location, construction, property and topographic surveys; proper use and methods of adjusting common survey instruments such as engineering transits and levels; the standard terminology, techniques, practices and equipment used in engineering survey. Ability to: use common survey instruments such as transits and levels; Learn the operation of precise levels, theodolites, plan tables, alidades and similar instruments; do sufficient lettering and simple drafting; prepare notes, sketches, field maps and reports; reduce field notes; supervise subordinate engineering aids or other members of a survey party, construction or inspection crew; inspect construction projects; perform physical sight tests of construction materials; read and interpret plans and specifications; give and follow oral and written instructions; get alona well with others. Health and Physical Condition: Persons seeking appointment to positions in this class must meet the health and physical condition standards deemed necessary and proper for performance of the duties. This is the first specification approved for the new class, ENGINEERING AID IV. APPROV D: /-P- 11T% _ L (Date) HERBERT T. DOI Director of Personnel Services
