ENGINEERING DRAFTING TECHNICIAN III 5.212
Duties Summary:
Prepares, plans and supervises the preparation of engineering maps
and plans; makes difficult mathematical computations; and performs other
related duties as required.
Distinguishing Characteristics:
This class differs from that of Engineering Drafting Technician II
in that the Engineering Drafting Technician III has supervisory and
technical review responsibility over the work of subordinate personnel
whereas the Engineering Drafting Technician II performs skilled engineering
drafting and carries assignments through the completion of finished drawings.
Examples of Duties:
Plans, assigns, coordinates and reviews the work of subordinates
engaged in the preparation of engineering maps and plans in connection with
the construction of highways, storm drains, sewers, bridges and other
engineering projects; assists engineers in obtaining data for design work
and performs highly complex and technical work; makes electrical wiring
diagrams and schematic drawings of control systems; plots and supervises the
plotting of field notes and coordinates the work of computing distances,
angles, areas and quantities; compiles, checks, prepares and drafts detailed
plans or maps of engineering surveys; makes and checks computations; makes
field investigations for gathering data and for insuring compliance with
plans and specifications; prepares narrative and statistical reports.
Minimum Qualification Requirements for the Class:
Training and Experience: A combination of education and experience
substantially equivalent to graduation from high school with courses in
mathematics and five years of drafting experience, one of which shall have
involved supervisory or technical review responsibility.
Knowledge of: construction plans and practices and legal requirements
of building, plumbing and electrical trades; mathematics, including plane
trigonometry, particularly as applied to the computation of distances,
quantities, angles, areas and traverses in the reduction of survey notes
and in the development of maps, plans and descriptions; the nomenclature,
symbols, methods, principles, practices and instruments used in engineering
drafting and mapping; the general sources of engineering information;

principles and practices of supervision.
Ability to: use drafting instruments, planimeters, slide rule and
calculating machines; make mathematical computations, using legarithmic,
trigonometric and curve data tables; do free -hand lettering and sketching;
prepare and interpret a wide variety of maps, details, drawings and
descriptions from field notes and rough sketches or preliminary designs;
make work assignments; keep records; write clear and concise reports.
Health and Physical Condition:
Persons seeking appointment to positions in this class must meet the
health and physical condition standards deemed necessary and proper for
performance of the duties.
This is the first specification approved for the new class,
ENGINEERING DRAFTING TECHNICIAN III.
