PAINTER HELPER
Duties Summary:
8.153
Assists a skilled painter in mixing paint and preparing various
types of surfaces for painting; applies paint by brush or spray gun
to equipment, furniture, interiors and exteriors of buildings and
other surfaces; and performs other related duties as required.
Distinguishing Characteristics:
This is the entry level class in the Painting series. This
class differs from that of Painter in that the Painter Helper works
under the supervision of a skilled Painter or performs simple
painting independently; whereas, the Painter performs skilled
painting work requiring the ability to mix paint, match colors,
and apply paint economically and effectively to many types of
surfaces.
This class differs from that of Equipment Painter in that the
Painter Helper assists a skilled painter or performs simple painting
independently; whereas, the Equipment Painter performs skilled work
in painting and refinishing motorized equipment.
Examples of Duties:
Erects scaffolding and removes or covers objects which might
be splattered with paint; prepares surfaces to be painted by
scraping, burning, sanding or washing; makes minor repairs to
surfaces preparatory to painting; applies paint, varnishes, stains,
lacquers and enamels to building interiors and exteriors, furniture,
equipment, cement and other surfaces; cleans brushes and other
painting equipment; may perform services in other building trades
when not utilized as a Painter Helper.
Minimum Qualification Requirements for the Class:
Training and Experience: A combination of education and ex-
perience substantially equivalent to completion of the eighth grade
and one year of experience as an apprentice or helper under a
journeyman painter.
Knowledge of: practices, tools and equipment used in applying
paints, varnishes, stains, lacquers and enamels and other painting
materials; methods of cleaning brushes and other painting equipment;
methods of- preparing surfaces for the application of paint and other
coverings; occupational hazards and safety precautions applicable
to the trade.

Ability to: work from rigging and scaffolds; follow oral and
written instructions.
Health and Physical Condition:
Persons seeking appointment to positions-in this class must
meet the health and physical condition standards deemed necessary
and proper for performance of the duties.
This is the first specification approved for the new
class, PAINTER HELPER.
