MACHINIST 8.300
Duties Summarv:
Performs general bench or hand work and operates machine tools
and machine shop equipment in the construction, installation, operation
and repair of machinery, apparatus and equipment; and performs other
related duties as required.
Distinguishing Characteristics:
This class represents journeyman level machining work. It differs
from Mechanical Repair and Maintenance classes in that the Machinist is
engaged in the fabrication of metal objects and parts as a primary duty;
whereas, positions in the Mechanical Repair and Maintenance classes are
engaged in the repair of mechanical equipment as a primary duty.
Examples of Duties:
Sets up and operates lathes, shapers, hydraulic presses, grinders,
drill presses, and other machine tools; makes and rebuilds brass bushings,
steel couplings, shafts, bearings, nuts, pins, steel sprockets, gears,
hubs, pipe flanges, tees and nipples, cuts keyways; rebores engine blocks;
reams connecting rods and bushings; refaces automotive and pipe valves;
reshapes cylinder heads, engine blocks, manifolds; makes pile driver
heads; prepares working sketches; estimates material and labor costs;
determines the need for supplies; uses gas and electrical welder in
performing body and fender repair work; may repair and overhaul auto-
motive equipment.
Minimum Qualification Requirements for the Class:
Training and Experience: A combination of education and experience
substantially equivalent to completion of the eighth grade and four
years of machine shop experience as an apprentice or helper under a
journeyman Machinist.
Knowledge of: the practices, tools, materials and equipment of
the macz n st trade; the qualities and uses of metals, alloys and other
materials used in the building and construction of machinery parts;
safety measures to be followed in machine shop work; mechanical drawing.
Ability too: operate lathes, shapers, grinders and drill presses;
do prec sC on machinist work; operate sanders and buffers; make shafts,
couplings, bolts, gear hubs, bushings or bearings, pipe flanges, tees
and nipples; understand and follow oral and written instructions.
Health and Physical Condition:
Persons seeking appointment to positions in this class must meet
the health and physical condition standards deemed necessary and proper
for performance of the duties.

This is an amendment to the specification for the class,
MACHINIST, which was approved on September 20, 1957, and
is to be substituted for that specification.
