HomeMy WebLinkAbout8.584 FIRE EQUIPMENT MECHANIC 20130225DEPARTMENT OF PERSONNEL SERVICES COUNTY OF KAUA'I FIRE EQUIPMENT MECHANIC 8.584 Duties Summary: Repairs, modifies, tests and maintains fire fighting apparatus and automotive equipment; and performs other related duties as required. Distin uishing Characteristics: This class is distinguished by its primary responsibility for repairing, modifying and maintaining fire fighting apparatus and automotive equipment. Example of Duties: • Diagnoses motor knocks, noises or mechanical failures in firefighting and ocean safety equipment and apparatus, rescue boats, ATVs, jet skis and trailers; • Inspects, adjusts and replaces defective mechanical units in automotive.and diesel equipment; times cam shafts and ignition; repairs and overhauls gasoline or diesel engines, brake systems, transmissions, differentials and front and rear axles; overhauls steering mechanisms and drive shafts; grinds valves; • Determines needed repair parts; wires and rewires electrical systems such as starters, distributors, generators, alternators, magnetos; road tests equipment after being repaired; • Repairs and maintains high pressure rotary and centrifugal pumps, air compressors, lawn mowers; repairs portable and stationary battery chargers, portable and stationary power plants; • Removes, replaces, fabricates and remodels fenders, hoods, panels, radiators for both automotive and other types of fire fighting and ocean safety equipment; mixes and matches paints and applies primer and finish coats using spray guns and brushes; fabricates various unobtainable parts by operating lathes and grinders; welds body frames, cracked manifolds, oil pans; repairs fire hoses and nozzles; • Instructs Fire Equipment Operators and Ocean Safety personnel in the use of new equipment; maintains maintenance records and reports and operational status of Fire Department equipment; May respond to fire and ocean safety calls to see that equipment is operating properly. FIRE EQUIPMENT MECHANIC - 2 - 8.584 Minimum Oualification Requirements for the Class: Training and Experience: Experience and /or training of sufficient scope and quality to competently perform the journeyworker skills and duties of this position. License Requirement: Possession of the appropriate Commercial Driver's License and applicable endorsements; current State of Hawaii Department of Transportation Medical Examination Certificate. Knowled e of: theory and principles of the internal combustion engine; the principles of electricity as applied to the electrical systems of automotive equipment; theory and principles of high pressure positive displacement and centrifugal pumps; the use of hydraulic oil presses, lathes, gauges, gear or bearing pullers, sanding machines, spray guns, testing equipment and other mechanical implements used in the trade; the occupational hazards and precautionary measures applicable to the trade. Ability to: plan, organize, maintain maintenance records and reports, and lay out and set up work; locate and adjust mechanical defects in gasoline and diesel driven automotive equipment; maintain and repair non - automotive equipment such as high pressure rotary and centrifugal pumps, air compressors, and lawn mowers; make repairs using modern tools, equipment and procedures; do welding and simple body and fender repairs; interpret and work from rough sketches or blueprints as well as from oral and written instructions; work with dexterity and safety; handle weights and loads; work with and interpret a computer analyzer for diesel and gas engines. Health and Physical Condition Requirements: Persons seeking appointment to positions in this class must meet the health and physical condition standards deemed necessary and proper for performance of the duties. Physical Effort Grouping: Heavy This is a recoding and amendment to the specification for the class, FIRE EQUIPMENT MECHANIC, which was approved on September 28, 1976, which was amended on November 15, 1991 and February 13, 1996, and is to be substituted for that specification.
