HomeMy WebLinkAbout8.585 LEAD FIRE EQUIPMENT MECHANIC 20130225DEPARTMENT OF PERSONNEL SERVICES COUNTY OF KAUAI LEAD FIRE EQUIPMENT MECHANIC 8.585 Duties Summary: Supervises and participates in repairing, modifying, testing and maintaining fire fighting apparatus and automotive equipment; and performs other related duties as required. Distinguishing Characteristics: This class differs from the Fire Equipment Mechanic in that the Lead Fire Equipment Mechanic supervises Fire Equipment Mechanics, helpers, apprentices and others, and participates in repairing, modifying, testing and maintaining fire fighting apparatus and automotive equipment; whereas the Fire Equipment Mechanic independently repairs, modifies and maintains fire fighting apparatus and automotive equipment and may supervise the work of helpers, apprentices and others as required. Example of Duties: • Plans, assigns and supervises the work of, and participates with Fire Equipment and other mechanics in repairing firefighting, ocean safety, rescue, HAZMAT, and automotive equipment. • Supervises and participates in the diagnoses of motor knocks, noises and mechanical failures and the inspection, adjustment and replacement of defective mechanical units in automotive and diesel equipment. • Supervises and participates in the timing of cam shafts and ignitions, the repair and overhaul of gasoline and diesel engines, brake systems, transmissions, differentials, and front and rear axles. • Supervises and participates in the overhauling of steering mechanisms and drive shafts and the grinding of valves. • Supervises and participates in determining needed repair parts, the wiring and rewiring of electrical systems such as starters, distributors, generators, alternators, magnetos, etc. • Supervises and participates in the road testing of equipment following repair. • Supervises and participates in the repair and maintenance of high pressure rotary and centrifugal pumps, air compressors, lawn mowers, portable and stationary battery chargers, portable and stationary power plants. LEAD FIRE EQUIPMENT MECHANIC - 2 - 8.585 Supervises and participates in the removal, replacement, fabrication, and remodeling of fenders, hoods, panels, radiators, etc., for both automotive and other types of fire fighting equipment; the mixing and matching of paints; the application of primer and finish coats using spray guns and brushes; the fabrication of unobtainable parts by operating lathes and grinders, etc. • Supervises and participates in the welding of body frames, cracked manifolds, oil pans; the repair of fire hoses and nozzles, etc. Instructs fire and ocean safety equipment operators in the use of new equipment and responds to fire and ocean safety calls to see that equipment is operating properly. Maintains records of work activities and prepares reports. Minimum Oualification Requirements for the Class: Training and Experience: A combination of education and experience substantially equivalent to graduation from high school and two years of full -time experience as a journeyman fire equipment mechanic; or any equivalent combination of training and experience. License Requirement: Possession of the appropriate valid Commercial Driver's License with proper endorsements; current State of Hawaii Department of Transportation Medical Examination Certificate. Knowled e of: theory and principles of the internal combustion engine; the principles of electricity as applied to electrical systems of automotive equipment; theory and principles of high pressure, positive displacement and centrifugal pumps; the use of hydraulic oil presses, lathes, gauges, gear or bearing pullers, sanding machines, spray guns, testing equipment and other mechanical implements used in the trade; the occupational hazards and precautionary measures applicable to the trade; principles of supervision. Ability to: assign, supervise and review the work of others; estimate time and materials necessary to complete a job; encourage safety practices and enforce safety rules; handle weights and loads; maintain records and produce written reports; plan, lay out and set up work; locate and adjust mechanical defects in gasoline and diesel driven automotive equipment; demonstrate proper work methods and set the pace; maintain and repair -non- automotive equipment such as high pressure rotary and centrifugal pumps, air compressors, and lawn mowers; make repairs using modern tools, equipment and procedures; do welding and body fender repairs; interpret and work from rough sketches or blue prints as well as from oral and written instructions; maintain harmony in work relationships among workers.
