TRANSIT FLEET MECHANIC 8.586
Duties Summary:
Performs a variety of semi - skilled and skilled
mechanical installation, repair and maintenance work
involving inspection, diagnosis, repair and service of the
County's transit fleet vehicles and equipment; performs
other related duties as required.
Distinguishing Characteristics:
Positions assigned to this class perform a full range
of vehicle and /or equipment repair and maintenance tasks,
including routine and minor maintenance activities and more
difficult and complex work assignments.
This is an operational level mechanic class where
incumbents use some judgment in making required repairs.
Assignments are completed within acceptable work standards
with a minimum of supervision.
Examples of Duties:
Provides for technical installation, maintenance and
repair work to operate and maintain transit fleet vehicles
and equipment; performs installation of major and minor
repairs; troubleshoots and diagnoses problems associated
with diesel and gasoline motors, hydraulic systems and
electrical systems; schedules and performs preventive and
routine maintenance, including changing filters and fluids;
responds to "trouble calls ", diagnose problems and makes
necessary repairs; remove, repair and /or install tires,
paint wheels, and perform related tire work; operate
servicing equipment such as jacks, hydraulic hoists,
battery chargers, pumps, etc.; recommend repairs needed to
maintain equipment in operational condition; may recommend
specifications for new equipment to be purchased; keeps
accurate and current records of fleet maintenance
activities; maintains manual and computerized logs and
records of maintenance, service and repairs on transit
fleet equipment; coordinates and monitors the work of
contractors; plans and schedules repairs and preventive

maintenance to be performed on vehicles and equipment; may
instruct and guide less experienced personnel.
Minimum Qualification Reauirements for the Class:
Training and Experience: Experience and /or training
of sufficient scope and quality to competently perform the
skills and duties of the position. Typically, this type of
experience and /or training is obtained through completion
of a recognized automotive or diesel mechanic program.
License Requirement: Possession of an appropriate
valid Hawaii State motor vehicle operator's license, as
required of the position.
Knowledge of: basic mechanical, electrical, and
hydraulic systems common to transit vehicles; basic
analysis and modern diagnostic techniques; routine
mechanical repairs and adjustments; common automotive parts
and supplies; occupational hazards and standard safety
practices and procedures; proper use of commonly used
mechanic tools and diagnostic equipment; arithmetic.
Ability to: inspect, diagnose and repair a wide
variety of transit vehicle mechanical, hydraulic and
electrical components; perform strenuous physical activity
common to the trade; read and interpret electrical wiring
diagrams, service manuals and other reference materials;
operate buses for maintenance; communicate effectively both
orally and in writing; keep simple records; establish and
maintain effective working relationships; maintain adequate
attendance.

Persons seeking appointment to positions in this class
must meet the health and physical condition standards
deemed necessary and proper for performance of the duties.
