HEAVY VEHICLE MECHANIC I 8.587
Duties Summar
Repairs and overhauls a variety of heavy automotive
vehicles /equipment, including the repair and overhaul of complex
hydraulic and electrical systems, as a substantially full -time
assignment; and performs other related duties as required.
Distinguishing Characteristics:
This is the journey level class in the Heavy Vehicle Mechanic
series. This class is distinguished by its primary
responsibilities for repairing and overhauling automotive
vehicles /equipment such as but not limited to passenger buses,
ladder trucks, dump trucks, and large passenger vans, including the
repairing and overhauling of complex hydraulic and electrical
systems of same.
This class differs from that of Heavy Vehicle Mechanic II in
that the Heavy Vehicle Mechanic I repairs and overhauls a variety
of heavy automotive vehicles /equipment and may supervise the work
of helpers, apprentices and others as required; whereas, the Heavy
Vehicle Mechanic II supervises mechanics, helpers, apprentices and
others, and participates in the repair and overhaul of a variety of
heavy automotive vehicle /equipment.
Examples of Duties:
Diagnoses motor knocks, noises or mechanical failures;
removes, repairs, overhauls, installs and tests gasoline and diesel
engines; inspects, removes, repairs and replaces such parts as
valves, gaskets, piston rings, connecting rods, camshafts, lifters,
etc.; repairs and overhauls major units including brake systems,
transmissions, steering units, cooling systems, differentials,
front and rear axles; inspects, repairs and overhauls complex
hydraulic and electrical systems; repairs various specialized
mechanical parts of equipment such as -- centrifugal pumps, wheel
chair lifts, conveyor belts, etc.; road tests equipment; performs
oxyacetylene and electric arc welding in connection with repair
work; may assign tasks to other mechanics and supervise the work of
helpers.
Minimum Qualification Requirements for the Class:
Training and Experience: Experience and /or training of
sufficient scope and quality to competently perform the journey
level skills and duties of the position.

License Requirement: Possession of an appropriate valid
commercial driver's license; proper endorsements, as applicable,
and certificate approved by the Environmental Protection Agency
(EPA) for the servicing and disposal of refrigerants, as required,
prior to completion of probation; a current State Department of
Transportation medical examination certificate and other license
required by law; and an Automotive Service Excellence (ASE)
certificate.
Knowledge of: theory and principles of the internal combustion
engine; the principles of electricity as applied to the electrical
systems of automotive equipment; the principles of complex
hydraulic systems, tools, machines, materials and practices used in
the repair and overhaul of heavy automotive equipment; operation
of various types of heavy vehicles sufficient to conduct road
tests; hazards and safety practices applicable to the trade.
Ability to: diagnose and correct mechanical defects in
gasoline and diesel- driven motorized equipment; repair and overhaul
a variety of heavy vehicles; use appropriate tools and testing
equipment; read and interpret various manufacturers' manuals in
performing work; read schematic wiring and hydraulic flow diagrams;
perform heavy manual work and lifting; work with dexterity and
safety; understand and follow written and oral instructions;
maintain good working relationships with others.
Health and Physical Conditions Requirements:
Persons seeking appointment to positions in this class must
meet the health and physical conditions standards deemed necessary
and proper for performance of the duties.

class, HEAVY VEHICLE MECHANIC I, which was approved on June
25, 1997, and is to be substituted for that specification.
