HomeMy WebLinkAbout8.588 HEAVY VEHICLE MECHANIC II 19980910DEPARTMENT OF PERSONNEL SERVICES COUNTY OF KAUAI HEAVY VEHICLE MECHANIC II 8.588 Duties Summary: Supervises and participates in the repair and overhaul of a variety of heavy automotive vehicles /equipment, including the repair and overhaul of complex hydraulic and electrical systems; and performs other related duties as required. Distinguishing Characteristics: This class differs from that of Heavy Vehicle Mechanic I in that the Heavy Vehicle Mechanic II supervises mechanics, helpers, apprentices and others, and participates in the repair and overhaul of a variety of heavy automotive vehicles /equipment; whereas, the Heavy Vehicle Mechanic I repairs and overhauls a variety of heavy automotive vehicles /equipment and may supervise the work of helpers, apprentices and others as required. Examples of Duties: Plans, assigns and inspects the work of heavy vehicle mechanics and helpers; participates in the repair and overhaul of gasoline and diesel engines, including the repair and overhaul of complex hydraulic and electrical systems; inspects and road tests heavy automotive equipment; diagnoses engine and other electrical and mechanical failures; estimates time and material needed to perform a job; requisitions materials and supplies; determines the priority of work to be performed; reviews work in progress and upon completion; performs minor welding in connection with repair work; maintains records of work activities and prepares reports. Minimum Qualification Requirements for the Class: Training and Experience: Experience and /or training of sufficient scope and quality to show demonstrated competence in performing the journey level duties of a Heavy Vehicle Mechanic. License Requirement: Possession of an appropriate valid commercial driver's license; proper endorsements as applicable, and certificate approved by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) for the servicing and disposal of refrigerants, as required, prior to completion of probation; a current State Department of Transportation medical examination certificate, and other license required by law; and an Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) certificate. HEAVY VEHICLE MECHANIC II -2- 8.588 Knowledge of: theory and principles of the internal combustion engine; the principles of electricity as applied to the electrical system of automotive equipment; the principles of complex hydraulic systems; tools, machines, materials and practices used in the repair and overhaul of heavy automotive equipment; operation of various types of heavy vehicles sufficient to conduct road tests; hazards and safety practices applicable to the trade; principles and practice of supervision. Ability to: diagnose and correct mechanical defects in gasoline and diesel - driven motorized equipment; repair and overhaul a variety of heavy vehicles; use appropriate tools and testing equipment; read and interpret various manufacturers' manuals in performing work; estimate time and materials necessary to complete a job; maintain records; give and follow oral and written instructions; plan, assign, and review the work of others; encourage safety practices and enforce safety rules and regulations; supervise and maintain harmony in work relationships among workers; demonstrate proper work methods and set the pace; handle weights and loads.
