HomeMy WebLinkAbout8.865 HEAVY TRUCK DRIVER 19690719DEPARTMENT OF PERSONNEL SERVICES COUNTY OF KAUAI HEAVY TRUCK DRIVER 8.865 Duties Summarv: Operates and maintains a truck and attachments with a factory -rated capacity of 5 tons and over, or a tank truck with a capacity of 1200 gallons and over as a regular, primary assignment in transporting a variety of cargo; and performs other related duties as required. Distinguishing Characteristics: This class differs from that of Truck Driver in that the Heavy Truck Driver operates and maintains a truck and attachments with a factory -rated capacity of 5 tons and over or a tank truck with a capacity of 1200 gallons and over; whereas, the Truck Driver operates and maintains a truck and attachments with a factory -rated capacity of at least 1 -1/2 but less than 5 tons or a tank truck of less than 1200- gallon capacity. Examples of Work: Operates a truck representative of the class in hauling sand, dirt, cement, gravel, asphalt, rocks, lumber, rubbish, tools, equipment, and other materials; may haul furniture, heavy appliances, and other fragile cargo; may operate truck trailers, heavy concrete mixer trucks, or driving units of heavy mobile cranes; transports personnel to and from work sites; operates tank truck to carry and /or spray water, oil, gasoline, poison, etc.; operates controls and lift gates, hoisting drums and winches, generators, air compressors, post hole differs, pumps, and other equipment as may be towed by, attached to, or mounted on trucks; keeps truck supplied with gasoline, oil, water, and air, changes and repairs tires; makes minor emergency repairs as necessary and reports major defects and malfunctions; loads and unloads truck or may supervise others in performing tasks related to the operation of the truck or attachments; performs simple maintenance work or heavy manual labor as required; may collect and replace bins at sites, and haul filled containers to the transfer stations or landfill, and empties containers; may operate construction or related HEAVY TRUCK DRIVER 2 8.865 equipment or lighter trucks as an incidental or relief assignment; may keep records and prepare simple reports. Minimum Qualification Requirements for the Class: Training and Experience: A combination of experience and training substantially equivalent to one (1) year of work experience in the operation of a truck representative of the next lower class. License Requirement: Possession of a valid State of Hawaii motor vehicle operator's license (Type 4), or appropriate commercial driver's license with proper endorsements, as applicable, and a current State of Hawaii medical examiner's certificate. Knowledge of: the uses, methods of operation and capacities of trucks; general maintenance practices as they relate to motorized equipment; laws, ordinances, rules and regulations governing the operation of motor vehicles on streets and highways; hazards and safety precautions applicable to operation of a truck; local geography. Ability to: operate a truck skillfully and safely; understand and observe traffic laws and rules; make minor emergency repairs to trucks; recognize mechanical and operational defects in equipment; understand and follow oral and written instructions; perform manual labor. Health and Phvsical Condition: Persons seeking appointment to positions in this class must meet the health and physical condition standards deemed necessary and proper for performance of the duties. This is an amendment to the specification for the class, HEAVY TRUCK DRIVER, which was approved on February 20, 1981, and amended on August 2, 1989, and is to be substituted for that specification.
