class is distinguished by its performances of skilled
masonry work in the placing of bricks, rocks, stones, tiles, concrete
and mortar on construction, maintenance and repair projects.
Examples of Duties:
Constructs, rzaintains, alters and repairs retaining walls,
culvert headers, catch basins, gutters, storm drains, guard rails, side -
walks, curbings, concrete floors, etc. using bricks, concrete blocks,
hollow tiles and poured concrete? constructs forms for a variety of
objects; cuts and shapes bricks, tiles and stones preparatory to setting;
reads and works from ?,-lueprints, plans and sketches; may supervise the
work of helpers, may perform euties in other trades when not occupied
as mason.
Minimum Qualification Requirements for the Class:
Training and Experience: F combination of education and expe-
rience substantia y equivalent to completion of the eighth grade, and
successful completion of apprenticeshi -n training or four years of expe-
rience in rasonry *,nor?_ under a journeyman mason.
Knowlec.ge of: the practices, tools, equipment and materials
used in the masonry trade; the various }rinds of brich�, stone and tile and
their adaptability and uses- proper proportioning of mortar for a variety
of purposes; characteristics and adaptabilities of different mortar
mixes; occupational hazards anc_ safety precautions of the trade.
Ability toe mix and pour concrete; mix mortar to the proper
consistency alien walls; construct forms for concrete; cut and shape
stones, tiles and bricl4:s: read and interpret blueprints, plans and
sketches: understand and follo:.i oral and written instructions.
Health and Physical Condition:
Persons seeking appointment to positions in this class must
meet the health and physical condition standards deemed necessary and
proper for performance of the duties.
