LANDFILL UTILITY WORKER 8.976
Duties Summarv:
Performs a variety of semi - skilled, manual and
supportive tasks involved in the maintenance of buildings,
structures, and equipment at a County landfill, and the
general care of the surrounding grounds; assists in
maintaining and servicing trucks and equipment; and
performs other related duties as required.
Distinguishing Characteristics:
This class is distinguished by its responsibility to
perform minor building and equipment maintenance and
groundskeeping work within and around a County landfill.
Examples of Duties:
Operates the maintenance truck and assists landfill
equipment operators in the changing of tires and in
maintaining, fueling, lubricating and making other minor
repairs to equipment; performs minor maintenance of other
motorized or power equipment; checks buildings and grounds
to locate conditions reporting need for repair and
maintenance work; replaces missing or damaged sections of
the chain link perimeter fencing; replaces fuses and bulbs;
cleans clogged drains; repairs leaky faucets and other
plumbing fittings; paints, brushes, and cleans outside and
inside walls of gutters and buildings as assigned; performs
general cleanup tasks at the landfill; assists in planting,
trimming and fertilizing plants and shrubbery; assists in
cleaning windows, lavatories, wash basins and restrooms,
and in sweeping and mopping floors; assists equipment
operators in the changing of tires and in maintaining,
lubricating, and making other minor repairs to equipment;
uses a variety of hand tools and some power equipment as
necessary; participates in collecting samples and in
conducting routine monitoring of surface water,
groundwater, landfill gas, leachate and daily cover
thickness in compliance with landfill operating permits and
in accordance with regulatory requirements and monitoring
plans; directs refuse carrying vehicles, and controls the

unloading of refuse, advising users of applicable rules and
regulations; may perform temporary assignment to operate
equipment as needed; regularly attends training sessions
relating to landfill operations, environmental control and
monitoring, and health and safety.
Minimum Qualification Requirements for the Class:
Training and Experience: A combination of training
and experience substantially equivalent to graduation from
high school and two (2) years of experience involving the
maintenance of building, grounds and equipment.
License Requirement: Possession of a valid motor
vehicle operator's license as applicable to the position.
Knowledge of: methods, tools, equipment and materials
used in carpentry, painting, plumbing, automotive and
electrical maintenance work; general groundskeeping
practices; occupational hazards and practices.
Ability to: operate an assigned truck skillfully and
safely; recognize defects and make minor repairs to
building, electrical and plumbing fixtures; use hand tools
utilized in a variety of building trades; operate and
maintain power mowers and other motorized equipment;
understand and follow oral and written communication and
instructions.
Health and Physical Condition Requirements:
Persons seeking appointment to positions in this class
must meet the health and physical condition standards
deemed necessary and proper for performance of the duties.
Special Working Conditions: Work is performed outside
exposed to a variety of weather conditions and outdoor
elements such as: unknown and dangerous conditions,
unusual environmental stress, contagious infectious
diseases, irritating chemicals, life - threatening
situations, excessive dampness, heat, humidity, dry
atmosphere, constant /excessive noise, slippery /uneven
walking surfaces, grease, oils, dust, dirt, fumes, smoke
and gases. Work may involve rotating shifts, long or
irregular work hours, working around machines with moving
parts and moving objects, working on ladders or elevated
surfaces.

class LANDFILL UTILITY WORKER effective October 2,
2007.
