CSW 2017-09 Discussion and possible action on Lending Library procedures and public
announcement via County of Kaua‘i press release.
The consensus from the Committee was that the public does not know about the books and
that they are available for public use.
• Ms. Ignacio-Neumiller proposed a press release and a check-out process.
• Ms. Wistinghausen suggested patrons send the information to a Boards and
Commissions email or to Sandra’s email. Email content would include name, phone
number, email address, and title of book borrowed as a way to check out and keep the
information private.
• Ms. Valente said patrons could write their information on a clipboard. Chair Lasker
added that previous information could be covered up with a piece of paper to maintain
confidentiality. She believed a follow-up call to the borrower every 5 months on
unreturned books would be needed, and that one of the CSW members could be
assigned the task. Due to confidential information being stored, Ms. Muragin said she
would need to obtain the opinion of legal counsel.
• Ms. Carvalho stated that the Lending Library needed more exposure. She suggested a
sign, and that the bookshelf be placed in a different location within the Office of
Boards and Commissions.
• Ms. Wistinghausen stated that if the Committee wanted the books to be circulated and
used by the community, she suggested it be donated to the Līhu‘e Library or other
libraries on the island where it could be part of the State of Hawai‘i Library system.
She said each book should be labeled with a sticker that said it was donated on behalf
of the Kaua‘i County Committee on the Status of Women.
• Ms. Valente stated that she would like to expand and add more books and proposed
they promote donations from the community.
• Chair Lasker recommended the Committee consider a press release, and after 6

months re-evaluate the progress. If there was no movement, she proposed the
Committee consider Ms. Wistinghausen's suggestion.
• Ms. Wistinghausen proposed that they could still maintain a lending library and add
books as part of the events that are planned, like Women’s History month. She said
related books could be available for purchase at the event, or participants could
sponsor the purchase of their favorite book(s).
Due to time constraints, Chair Lasker asked the Committee to defer the discussion to next
month's agenda.
Ms. Wistinghausen moved to
defer CSW 2017-09 to the next
