Water shutdown scheduled for Hanamaulu area Jan. 31 to Feb. 1
HANAMAULU – The Department of Water (DOW) has scheduled a 12-hour water shutdown for a large
Hanamaulu area starting Tuesday night, Jan. 31, through Wednesday morning, Feb. 1, from 8 p.m. to 8 a.m.,
weather permitting. Affected customers are located on all roads on the makai-side of Kuhio Highway, from
Laukona Street to Hanamaulu Road, including King Kaumualii Elementary School and Hanamaulu Beach Park.
The shutdown will allow a private contractor, Earthworks Pacific Inc., for the Hooluana at Kohea Loa
development to connect a new waterline to the DOW’s existing system.
During the shutdown, s ome water can remain stored in the pipelines . Customers who do have water
are asked to practice water conservation measures and use water for essential needs only to avoid
draining the stored water in the system.
To prepare for the water shutdown, affected customers are advised to take the following steps:
Store enough water to meet your needs during the shutdown.
Notify family, friends and neighbors that may be affected.
Those with faulty water heaters should ensure that water heaters do not empty during the
shutdown.
Drive cautiously throu gh the work area and use alternate routes if possible.
Stay tuned to radio news reports or monitor www.facebook.com/KauaiDOW for any updates
to the shutdown. The DOW will also send updates through Blackboard Connect (formerly
known as Connect CTY ) – a mass notification system where customers can receive phone,
text and/or email alerts. To sign up for Blackboard Connect, please visit the county’s website
www.kauai.gov , or c all the Kauai County Emergency Management Agency at 241 -1800.
The DOW will provide two water wagons for essential water needs near King Kaumualii Elementary
School. Customers will need to bring their own water containers.
Affected customers will be notified through door -to-door notices.
Discolored Water Possibility
Res idents are advised that discolored water is likely to occur after the connection is completed and
the water main is turned back on . This may happen as a result of higher water pressure disturbing
--more--
the existing sediment within the pipelines. On Wednesday morning, Feb. 1, DOW crews will be
flushing the entire system area, to remove any discolored water. Some customers should expect
low er than normal water pressure during this time .
If discolored water does occur in your plumbing system , water should be flushed out through an
outside hose bib nearest to your meter until the water is clear.
For more information about the water shutdown or discolored water , call the DOW at 245-5455 or
245-5461.
For more information about the project and road work, call Earthworks Pacific Inc. at 246 -8808.
