Open houses to highlight Kaua‘i Short-Range Transit Plan
LĪHU'E – The public is invited to share their ideas about the future of The Kaua‘i Bus at
any of the open houses set for next week.
The open houses are scheduled from 4 to 6 p.m. at the following locations:
Tuesday, Jan. 31 – Kapa‘a Neighborhood Center, 4491 Kou Street
Wednesday, Feb. 1 – Līhu‘e Neighborhood Center, 3353 Eono Street
Thursday, Feb. 2 – Easter Seals Hawaii, Waimea Service Center, 4590 Ola Road
“We are developing strategies for the next five years via the Kaua‘i Short-Range Transit
Plan (SRTP), and would like to hear from the public on what improvements they would like to
see in The Kaua‘i Bus system,” said Transportation Executive Celia Mahikoa.
The SRTP covers a wide range of topics including: a fare analysis; financial assessment;
organizational assessment; paratransit; performance standards; scenarios and service planning;
transit marketing; and technology. The areas of focus are Līhu‘e and the Westside.
In conjunction with the SRTP, the Kaua‘i Transit Feasibility Study is also underway. That
study is looking at the vital role that transit plays in a comprehensive strategy to address
congestion on the island, especially on the North and South shores and the Eastside.
When the two plans are merged, Kaua‘i will have an island-wide public transit plan.

Funding for the SRTP is provided through a $200,000 grant from the Federal Transit
Administration, while the remaining $50,000 is covered by the County of Kaua‘i.
