April designated Tsunami Awareness Month in Hawai‘i
LĪHU‘E – In recognition of April being Tsunami Awareness Month in Hawai‘i, the Kaua‘i
Emergency Management Agency (KEMA) is joining the efforts of the Hawai‘i Emergency
Management Agency and other emergency management agencies across the state to promote
public awareness and preparedness.
“I encourage our residents and visitors to review Kaua‘i’s tsunami evacuation zones and
identify the most efficient routes to safe areas,” said KEMA Administrator Elton Ushio. “This
information can be found on the county website, http://www.kauai.gov/kema, phone directories,
as well as through signage installed along our coastal highways and major roads.”
Ushio pointed out that the evacuation zones were updated last year to include an
Extreme Tsunami Evacuation Zone that is based on recent scientific studies relating to an
extremely rare yet potentially devastating Great Aleutian Tsunami.
“Preparedness starts with the knowledge and awareness of the threats posed by
tsunamis. The next step is to prepare accordingly,” noted Mayor Bernard Carvalho Jr.
The KEMA has scheduled the following activities during Tsunami Awareness Month:
Tsunami awareness presentations for elementary school students that tour the Kaua‘i
Emergency Operations Center
Distribution of tsunami awareness information to middle and high school students and
teachers at an Earth Day event at the Pacific Missile Range Facility
Outreach and support to the Hawai‘i State Department of Education (DOE), Kaua‘i
Complex Area relating to the DOE Safe Schools Training initiative.
In addition, KEMA will be hosting deliveries of various courses that will help to improve
and enhance the skillsets of county, state, federal and non-governmental emergency
management partners, including:
ICS 300, Intermediate Incident Command System (ICS) for Expanding Incidents
ICS 400, Advanced ICS for Command and General Staff
MGT 346, EOC Operations and Planning for All Hazards
