Kaua‘i Resource Center not accepting non-HI5 recyclables
LĪHU‘E – The public is advised that effective Friday, April 21, the Kaua‘i Resource
Center (KRC) will no longer be accepting non-HI5 recyclables as the county’s contract for
services at the facility has been terminated.
The county plans to enter into a new contract for recycling processing at the KRC.
Details will be released when the contract is finalized.
The county will also be soliciting a vendor to operate a HI5 redemption center at the
KRC. This process of soliciting, contracting, and state certification will likely take several
months.
“We understand that the closure and limited services at the Kaua‘i Resource Center has
affected some and will affect more residents and businesses on Kaua‘i. We are working quickly
to implement solutions to meet the needs of recyclers on the island,” said Acting County
Engineer Lyle Tabata. “We ask for your continued patience as we move forward with these
solutions.”
The closure will effect HI5 redemption on the island. Those wanting to redeem their HI5
beverage containers at a Līhu‘e location can go to Reynold’s Recycling located at the corner of
Wilcox and Kanoa Road near Nāwiliwili Harbor. The facility is open Tuesday to Saturday from 9
a.m. to 5 p.m., and it is closed for lunch, from 12 to 1:30 p.m. For all other locations, please go
to www.kauai.gov/recycling for daily updates.
Battery recycling and free composting bins will still be available at the Kaua‘i Resource
Center during the temporary closure as the Solid Waste staff with offices at the facility will be on
hand. They will also be prepared to answer questions and direct people to alternate recycling
locations.
Residentially generated recyclables can be taken to the Kaua‘i Recycles bins at the back
parking lot of Kmart.
If your business generates recyclables that you have been hauling to the Kaua‘i
Resource Center, please call the county recycling office at 241-4841 for information.
