Managing Director DEPARTMENT OF FINANCE News Release April 28, 2017 KEN SHIMONISHI, DIRECTOR Tel (808) 241-4200 Fax (808) 241-6529 Applications for Long-Term Affordable Rental program available online LĪHU‘E – County officials announced that the owners of long-term affordable rental units on Kaua‘i can now apply online for a tax relief program at www.kauaipropertytax.com. Applications can also be picked at the Real Property Assessment Division located at the Līhu‘e Civic Center, Kapulē Building. To be eligible for the program, the units must be leased for at least one year at rates that are equal to or below the 80 percent household median income limits. The monthly rental limits by unit type are shown below: Tenant Pays Owner Pays Unit Type Any Utilities All Utilities Studio $976 $1,196 1-Bedroom $1,122 $1,365 2-Bedroom $1,235 $1,536 3-Bedroom $1,482 $1,844 4-Bedroom $1,553 $1,980 5-Bedroom $1,760 $2,252 If a tenant pays for any of the utilities (water, sewer, electric, or gas), then the lower rental rate is applicable. The long-term affordable tenant-occupied rental application must be submitted with a copy of the signed lease to the County of Kaua‘i, Real Property Assessment Division, 4444 Rice Street, Suite A-454, Līhu‘e, HI 96766. The deadline to file for the 2018 tax year is September 30, 2017, and the rental/lease agreements cannot expire on or before that date. The owners of affordable rentals that are leased for multiple years must submit an affidavit for each subsequent tax year stating that the same tenant and rents are in effect for the upcoming year in order to continue to receive the tax benefit.
