Managing Director News Release May 12, 2017 Free training for those who provide services to LEP individuals LĪHU‘E – A free workshop for those who provide services to limited English proficient (LEP) individuals will be offered next month. State and county workers, medical personnel, educators, community organizations as well as the general public are all welcomed to attend. The training will be held twice on Tuesday, June 6 at the Kaua‘i War Memorial Convention Hall in Līhu‘e. The first session will be offered from 9 to 11:30 a.m. The afternoon session will take place from 1 to 3:30 p.m. Linda Nuland, Kaua‘i County Equal Employment Opportunity/ADA coordinator, said, “We want to ensure that all LEP persons have meaningful access to government programs, services and activities. The workshop will assist us with achieving this goal.” An overview of the Language Access laws, what the requirements are to be compliant with these laws, and where to find available resources are among the topics that will be covered. Dr. Suzanne Zeng, assistant professor at the University of Hawai‘i (UH) Center for Interpretation and Translation Studies, will be facilitating the workshop. The free training is a collaborative effort between the Hawai‘i Office of Language Access, UH Center for Interpretation and Translation Studies and the County of Kaua‘i.
