This year, Senior Corps Week takes place from May 15 to May 19. More than 1,600 seniors in Hawai‘i aged 55 and better contribute their time and talents through Senior Corps programs. Here on Kaua‘i, Senior Corp impacts our community through Foster Grandparents who mentor and tutor students and through RSVP volunteers who provide services to improve education, improve the environment, promote and support healthy lifestyles, increase economic opportunity and support veterans and military families. Donna Olivas-Kaohi, Kaua‘i RSVP program coordinator said, “The Kauai community is greatly impacted through the generosity of time and talent provided by our Senior Corps volunteers. In turn, the lives of these kupuna are enriched by this experience. They’re more positive and healthier and they live longer. I encourage anyone who’s interested in the program to please give us a cal.” Over 300 seniors serve as RSVP volunteers throughout the Garden Isle helping organizations to fulfill their missions including: AARP; Department of Veterans Affairs Kaua‘i Community-based Outpatient Clinic; Kaua‘i Adult Day Health; Kaua‘i Habitat for Humanity; Senior Corps Week celebrated May 15-19 Page 2 05/15/17 Kaua‘i Hospice; Malama Kaua‘i; National Tropical Botanical Garden; and Senior Medicare Patrol. As a service project for Senior Corps Week, the Kaua‘i RSVP staff and volunteers will be on hand at the Older Americans Month Fair on Friday, May 19. They will be collecting canned goods and non-perishable food items for the Kaua‘i Independent Food Bank, and staffing information tables. The resource fair will be held at the Kukui Grove Center’s Food Court from 9:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Several times a year, the Kaua‘i RSVP coordinates collection drives that benefit local organizations. Past beneficiaries include schools, Kaua‘i Economic Opportunity’s homeless shelter and the YWCA of Kaua‘i’s Women’s Shelter.
