Managing Director KAUA‘I POLICE DEPARTMENT News Release For Immediate Release: June 22, 2017 DARRYL PERRY, CHIEF Tel (808) 241-1600 Fax (808) 241-1604 Police detain juvenile of suspected arson LĪHU‘E – Police detained a 14-year-old male from Līhu‘e, in connection with a brush fire that occurred on Kalepa Ridge in Līhu‘e on Monday afternoon. At approximately 2:26 p.m. Monday, firefighters were dispatched to a brush fire on Kalepa Ridge. Rescue 3 aboard Air 1 arrived at approximately 2:50 p.m. and utilized water drops to quickly extinguish the blaze. Police were called to the scene after fire officials and other witnesses reported seeing two teenage males leaving the scene of the fire. Following a preliminary police investigation, one of the juveniles was detained. He has since been released to his parent. Fire officials estimate that less than 1,000 square feet of a vegetated area was burned in the fire. “Arson is a dangerous and life-threatening crime, and offenders could face serious consequences,” said Kaua‘i Police Chief Darryl Perry. “While we are very fortunate that this situation was contained quickly and there were no injuries, it does not minimize the extent of damages brush fires can cause.” The police investigation remains ongoing. ###
