WAILUA – Kūhiō Highway in Wailua, near Marine Camp Road, was closed on Tuesday
morning while police responded to a two-car crash that resulted in injuries.
Shortly after 7:30 a.m., a Toyota SUV was heading north on Kūhiō Highway when it
crossed the center line and sideswiped a 16-passenger bus that was heading south.
The driver of the SUV, a 39-year-old Līhu‘e man, was transported to Wilcox Hospital with
serious injuries and has since been medevaced to Queen’s Hospital for further treatment.
The male driver of the bus, age 71 of Kapa‘a, and his two male passengers sustained
non-life threatening injuries and were transported to Wilcox Hospital. They have all since been
released.
While police conducted further investigation of the crash, all lanes on Kūhiō Highway
were closed and traffic was initially alternated through the shoulder along the highway’s outer
northbound lane.
Southbound traffic was later diverted through the Wailua Cane Haul Road, and
northbound traffic continued along the shoulder of Kūhiō Highway until police cleared the scene
at approximately 11 a.m.
The incident remains under police investigation.
