Sentencing set in methamphetamine trafficking case
LĪHU‘E – Scott K. Burgess, 59, formerly of Kapa‘a, faces 10 years in prison following his
no contest plea to a felony drug charge in the Fifth Circuit Court on Wednesday.
A Kaua‘i grand jury indicted Burgess in November 2013 for various charges arising from
the seizure of nearly 227 grams of methamphetamine and related drug paraphernalia from
Burgess’s Kapa‘a home in August 2013.
Following that bust, Burgess fled to the mainland and was subsequently arrested and
prosecuted by authorities there for methamphetamine charges. After serving time for those
charges, Burgess was extradited back to Hawai‘i for prosecution on the Kaua‘i charges.
On Wednesday, Burgess appeared before the Honorable Chief Judge Randal G.B.
Valenciano and entered a no contest plea to a class B felony of Promoting a Dangerous Drug in
the Second Degree.
Kaua‘i Prosecuting Attorney Justin F. Kollar stated, “Methamphetamine dealers inflict
immeasurable damage to the fabric of our community. We will continue to do whatever is
necessary to vigorously prosecute the predators who sell this poison to our neighbors, friends
and family members.”
Burgess will be sentenced on September 28, 2017.
Scott K. Burgess, age 59
