County to host inaugural community bike ride event
LĪHU'E – The public is invited to attend the inaugural Rice Roll bicycle event on Aug. 1 at
4:45 p.m. Bicyclists of all ages and abilities will meet at the Lihue Civic Center Rotunda for an
opportunity to ride their bikes together in a safe and fun-filled atmosphere.
The County of Kaua'i is partnering with Hawai'i Pacific Health, Wilcox Health, Get Fit
Kaua'i, Kaua'i Path and the Lihue Business Association to bring the community this first-time
event.
“I’m excited for this community bike ride,” said Mayor Bernard P. Carvalho Jr. “I invite
everyone to join us for this celebration of fun and healthy living.”
Jen Chahanovich, president and CEO of Wilcox Medical Center, said the mission of
Wilcox Health is to create a healthier Hawai'i.
“Events such as the Rice Roll bike ride allow us the opportunity to inspire healthier,
active lifestyles within the Kaua'i community,” said Chahanovich.
Kaua'i Path has been coordinating safe, fun, easy-paced bicycle rides in the
communities for many years.
“We are thrilled to build momentum around the Rice Street revitalization, and partner
with this group of organizations and the County of Kaua'i in promoting prudent bicycling
centered on the Lihue town core,” said Tommy Noyes, executive director of Kaua'i Path. “Folks
of all ages are welcome, nobody gets left behind, and we always hear very positive feedback
from participants.”
For those needing a bicycle to participate, Kaua'i Path can often accommodate requests
for loaner equipment submitted through the KauaiPath.org web site.
If you need an ASL interpreter, materials in an alternate format, or other auxiliary aid
support, please contact Lee Steinmetz at 241-4978 or lsteinmetz@kauai.gov at least seven
