Managing Director OFFICE OF THE MAYOR News Release For Immediate Release: July 28, 2017 ALDEN ALAYVILLA, PUBLIC INFORMATION OFFICER Tel (808) 241-4909 Fax (808) 241-6877 Mayor Carvalho, Kaua‘i Yankees complete goodwill mission to Japan Mayor Bernard P. Carvalho Jr. recently returned from a successful goodwill mission in Japan to promote Kaua‘i as a sports and cultural-exchange destination. The Mayor was accompanied by the Kaua‘i Yankees, a little league team from Līhu‘e that played in six games against little league players from Iwaki city and Hiroshima. “Mahalo to Iwaki Mayor Toshio Shimizu, Hiroshima Mayor Kazumi Matsui and Gov. Hidehito Yuzaki for being wonderful hosts during our visit,” said Mayor Carvalho. “And a big mahalo to all the parents and coaches who made this trip possible for our players.” During their stay in Iwaki, the players from Kaua‘i spent an evening with host families and also visited various landmarks in Iwaki and Hiroshima. “The trip was educational, cultural and an awesome opportunity for our keiki,” said Mayor Carvalho. One of the main goals for the trip was to encourage little league teams from Iwaki, Hiroshima and other cities to Kaua‘i in the near future. Mayor Carvalho visited Iwaki and signed the Kaua‘i-Iwaki Sister City pact in March 2011 and again in September of last year. The fall 2016 visit opened talks between Mayor Carvalho and Mayor Shimizu to bring the Kaua‘i Yankees to play in Japan. “We’re hopeful that our paths will cross again, and Kaua‘i will be able to show our ‘ohana from Japan the love and aloha they showed each and every one of us,” Mayor Carvalho said.
