KPD promotes Neighborhood Watch program
LĪHU‘E – Neighborhood Watch is a valuable program for communities across the nation,
and the Kaua‘i Police Department (KPD) is encouraging Kaua‘i residents to participate and get
involved.
In a recent visit to the Kaniko‘o Senior Housing in Līhu‘e, Lt. Roderick Green educated
residents about the Neighborhood Watch program and its curriculum.
“Every day we encounter situations where we are called to be the eyes and ears of law
enforcement,” stated Lt. Green. “Not only does Neighborhood Watch allow citizens to help in the
fight against crime, it is also an opportunity to improve their neighborhoods, and build their bond
through service.”
Approximately 30 attendees were informed of the Neighborhood Watch process and
were given safety tips on what to do in various scenarios.
Two new Neighborhood Watch programs have begun this year – Kaniko‘o Senior
Housing at Rice Camp Phase I and Phase II, and Papaloa Road in Kapa‘a. Neighborhood
Watch signs have been installed at both of these new locations.
There are also other active Neighborhood Watch programs throughout the island,
including in Princeville, Aliomanu Estates, Wailua Homesteads, Waipouli Road in Kapa‘a,
Puakea in Līhu‘e, and Kakela Makai in Kalāheo.
“Neighborhood Watch programs provide a unique and proactive approach to crime
prevention,” stated Kaua‘i Police Chief Darryl Perry. “It’s a long-term commitment with lasting
results towards a safer community.”
Forming a Neighborhood Watch program requires at least five interested households.
