5 P.M. UPDATE: Flash Flood Warning extended until 8 p.m.
HANALEI – The National W eather Service has extended the Flash Flood Warning for
Kaua‘i until 8 p.m., as runoff and stream levels remain high over areas across the island. The
warning may be extended, dropped or modified as conditions develop.
Kūhiō Highway, in the vicinity of the Hanalei Bridge, remains closed until further notice
due to flooding.
The American Red Cross has opened a shelter at Hanalei Elementary School.
Personnel from the state Department of Transportation continue to respond to a downed
tree over Kūhiō Highway at Lumaha‘i.
Kaua‘i Island Utility Cooperative has also reported localized power outages throughout
the island. KIUC crews continue to work on restoring power as quickly as possible.
Hā'ena and Kē'ē beaches are closed to swimming, and Grove Farm has closed the
access road to Māhāʻulepū until further notice due to hazardous conditions.
Officials continue to report heavy ponding, low visibility and other hazardous driving
conditions across the island. Motorists are advised to drive with extreme caution.
A Flash Flood Warning means flash flooding is imminent or occurring in streams, roads
and low-lying areas. Do not cross fast-flowing or rising water in your vehicle or on foot.
