Public invited to Rice Street Block Party on Sept. 23; Rice Street from Rice
Shopping center to Hardy and Kalena Streets will be closed for event
LĪHU'E – The public is invited to the Rice Street Block Party, a family-focused event,
from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 23, to experience a revitalized Rice Street District, and
to see what proposed Rice Street improvements will look like as a part of the Līhu‘e Town Core
Mobility and Revitalization Project.
Rice Street from the Rice Shopping Center to Hardy and Kalena Streets will be closed
from 3 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. for the Block Party. Kress Street will also be closed from Rice Street to
Halenani Street. Drivers are encouraged to use Umi Street, Hardy Street, Nāwiliwili Road or
Kapule Highway. Umi, Hardy and Kalena Streets will remain open during the event.
The event brings our community together on Rice Street to experience art, culture, food,
shopping, entertainment and the history of Rice Street. Free parking will be available at the
Kaua‘i War Memorial Convention Hall.
“I encourage our community and our visitors to enjoy the festivities at the Rice Street
Block Party,” said Mayor Bernard P. Carvalho Jr. “It’s a wonderful opportunity for every member
of the family, from keiki to kupuna, to learn about the Līhu‘e Town Core Mobility and
Revitalization Project and gather with your ‘ohana and friends.”
Earlier in the day, from 8 a.m. until pau, a keiki zone at Kalena Park will feature a keiki
basketball tournament with free shave ice, hot dogs, popcorn, chips and drinks.
Entertainment for the Block Party includes artists Makana, Revival, 1st Cut, as well as
performances by Wilcox School students, Taiko Kaua‘i, Art of Mime and more.
Proposed Rice Street improvements are part of the Lihue Town Core Mobility and
Revitalization Project, which was funded through a $13.8 million TIGER grant that the county
received. TIGER, or Transportation Investment Generating Economic Recovery, is a highly
competitive Federal grant program managed by the US Department of Transportation. The
Līhu‘e project improves connectivity and safety for all road users, and serves as a catalyst for
the economic revitalization of the historic Līhu‘e Town Core.
If you need an ASL Interpreter, materials in an alternate format, or other auxiliary aid
support, please contact the Kaua‘i County Planning Department at 241-4050 or
