Managing Director KAUA‘I POLICE DEPARTMENT News Release For Immediate Release: January 24, 2017 DARRYL PERRY, CHIEF Tel (808) 241-1600 Fax (808) 241-1604 Stranger approaches child in Līhu‘e; Police urge public to be vigilant LIHUE – The Kaua‘i Police Department is urging the public to be vigilant after a student was approached by a stranger while walking along Hardy Street in Līhu‘e on Friday. The incident occurred at approximately 1:30 p.m. fronting the Līhu‘e County Park tennis courts. The female student was walking from the bus stop to her nearby home, when a male subject in a white sedan pulled up next to her and asked her if she needed a ride home. The student refused the man’s offer and continued walking. The vehicle continued to follow her until she reached her home, when the vehicle apparently drove away. The subject was described as an Asian male with a dark complexion, crew cut haircut and a goatee. He is believed to be in his 50s. The vehicle he was driving was described as an older model white four-door sedan. The license plate is not known. “In light of this report, we are urging parents and educators to please talk to your children and students about stranger awareness and safety tips, particularly for those students who walk to and from school,” stated Kaua‘i Police Chief Darry Perry. KPD shares these safety tips for children:  Never talk to strangers or get into a stranger’s vehicle, even if they say they know your mom or dad.  If a stranger continues to talk to you, or stops a vehicle near you, run to the nearest safe place and tell an adult. If you have a cell phone, call 911 immediately.  If a stranger tries to grab you, run and scream for help – do whatever it takes to get away and attract attention from others.  It is always best to walk with a friend or a group of students.  Try to remember as much as you can about the stranger or vehicle.  Trust your instincts. If you feel you are in danger or something is not right, do not hesitate to report suspicious activity to the school or to police. Anyone with information on this incident is urged to call Police Dispatch at 241-1711. Those wishing to remain anonymous can call CrimeStoppers at 246-8300. ###
