Department of Public Works reminding public of general guidelines,
information on signs
LIHUE – The Department of Public Works is reminding the public that the County of
Kaua‘i’s sign ordinance has specific rules relating to specifications, permitting, and enforcement
of signs.
Signs that are prohibited include roof signs, portable signs, and special banners or
pennants displayed longer than four days prior or one day following an event.
“The benefits of having a sign ordinance reduces visual clutter on the island, allows fair
advertising for everyone, and promotes safety,” said Acting County Engineer Lyle Tabata.
Signs that need permits include directional signs, signs in business and industrial
districts, banners, or pennants and ground signs.
Before constructing a sign, please note that the sign ordinance has rules that include
size, shape, location, and placement of a sign.
Applications for a sign permit may be obtained at the Public Works Building Division on
4444 Rice Street, Suite 175, from 7:45 a.m. to 4:15 p.m., Monday to Friday.
The sign ordinance may be obtained from the following platforms:
Download it from the County of Kaua‘i website :
http://www.kauai.gov/PublicWorks/Building;
Obtain a copy from the Office of the Kaua‘i County Clerk at 4396 Rice Street,
Suite 206, from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., Monday to Friday;
Or call the Kaua‘i County Clerk at 241-6371 and make arrangements to purchase
and have a copy mailed.
When signs are not in compliance, the Department of Public Works will issue a notice
and compliance; and removal must take place within five working days. Failure to comply may
result in a fine of up to $50 per day for every day of the ordinance violation, pursuant to Chapter
15, Article 4, Outdoor Sign Ordinance Kaua‘i County Code 1987.
To report apparent violations of the sign ordinance, you may call the County Building
Division at 241-4854.
