Grand jury indicts man accused of stabbing at Tahiti Nui
Līhu‘e – Prosecuting Attorney Justin F. Kollar announced that on Wednesday a Fifth
Circuit grand jury returned an indictment charging Michael Beck, age 28 of Moloa‘a, with one
count of Assault in the First Degree and one count of Assault in the Second Degree relating to an
incident occurring at the Tahiti Nui restaurant in Hanalei on Sept. 16, 2017.
Assault in the First Degree is a class B felony punishable by up to 10 years in prison and
Assault in the Second Degree is a class C felony punishable by up to five years in prison.
The indictment alleges that Beck intentionally or knowingly caused serious bodily injury to
the victim in the incident, and also that Beck intentionally or knowingly caused bodily injury to the
victim with a dangerous instrument.
An indictment is an accusation that the defendant has committed a crime, and the
defendant is presumed to be innocent until found guilty by proof beyond a reasonable doubt in a
court of law.
