Managing Director KAUA‘I POLICE DEPARTMENT News Release For Immediate Release: December 4, 2017 DARRYL PERRY, CHIEF Tel (808) 241-1600 Fax (808) 241-1604 Kaua‘i’s 7th drowning victim identified HANALEI – Byron Elmendorf, a 73-year-old man of Washington, was determined as Kaua‘i’s seventh drowning victim of 2017. Elmendorf was bodyboarding in Hanalei Bay shortly before noon on Nov. 22 when he collapsed and was immediately brought out of the water by bystanders. Hanalei lifeguards arrived to the scene, administered CPR, and applied an AED. Elmendorf could not be revived and was transported by ambulance to Wilcox Hospital. The results of an autopsy performed on Nov. 29 showed drowning to be the preliminary cause of death. Representatives from Life’s Bridges, a grief counseling service, assisted Elmendorf’s family. ###
