County announces overnight closures of various parks
Due to excessive vandalism and complaints about suspicious activity at various County
of Kaua‘i park locations, these facilities will be closed to the public from 4:30 p.m. to 7:45 a.m.
daily beginning today, Dec. 20, per newly-established park rules.
“We’ve been experiencing chronic issues in these facilities, and community members,
unfortunately, no longer feel safe there at night,” said Director of Parks and Recreation Lenny
Rapozo. “The county’s goal is to keep our parks user friendly, clean, and safe for the community
to enjoy.”
The Department of Parks and Recreation will continue the limited use of these facilities
during closure times by permit, which can be obtained at any of the department’s permitting
sites.
The overnight closures include:
Kaua‘i War Memorial Convention Hall, including the parking lot and the area near the
Boys & Girls Club of Hawai‘i – Lihue Clubhouse;
Līhu‘e County Park;
And the County Lawn, fronting the Historic County Building
Additionally, Kalena Park will be closed from 6 p.m. to 6 a.m. daily.
Under Section 19-1.5.b. of the Kaua‘i County Code, the Director of Parks and Recreation
has the authority to close any section or part of any park facility as he “shall find reasonably
necessary for the health, safety or welfare of the public.”
“We want to thank the Kaua‘i Police Department for its assistance in preparing for and
enforcing the overnight closure,” Rapozo said.
The newly-established park rules are available for inspection at the Department of Parks
and Recreation office during normal business hours or may be mailed to any interested person
willing to pay the required fees for copying and postage. To request a copy, please call the
department at 241-4460.
For more information, please go the county website, www.kauai.gov/parks, or call the
