Hikers rescued from Hanakoa Valley, Uluwehi Falls
Firefighters responded to two calls of hikers in distress on Christmas morning near
Hanakoa Valley in Hā‘ena, and Uluwehi Falls in Wailua.
Police Dispatch was notified of the first incident at around 10:20 a.m., when a 54-year-
old male injured his back along the Kalalau Trail in Hanakoa Valley.
The man was airlifted by Rescue 3 personnel aboard Air 1 and flown to Princeville
Airport, where awaiting medics transported him to Wilcox Hospital.
At around noon the same day, firefighters were informed of a female who broke her
ankle along the hiking trail to Uluwehi Falls.
Rescue 3 personnel aboard Air 1 departed Princeville shortly after and flew towards the
Wailua River. While on scene, they located the injured woman and short-hauled her to a nearby
landing area, where she was assessed by awaiting medics.
