Search suspended for woman swept out to sea at ‘Anini;
Police identify victim
‘ANINI – The multi-agency search for a Maryland woman who was swept out to sea on
Monday evening was suspended Thursday afternoon.
Police have identified the woman as 22-year-old Destiny Marbury.
According to a police, Marbury entered the water at the north-end of ‘Anini Beach, when
she became distressed and called out to her friend for help at around 6 p.m. The friend, a
Kapa‘a man, jumped into the water to assist her, but he then ran into trouble in the high surf and
strong rip current.
The 37-year-old Kapa‘a man was rescued by a Good Samaritan and a firefighter. He
was treated by responding medics and released at the scene.
Marbury could not be located despite this week’s air, land and sea-based search with a
team of rescuers including Kaua'i lifeguards, firefighters, police and the U.S. Coast Guard.
Officials are now reporting this incident as Kaua‘i’s third drowning of 2017.
