Contrades “I am heartbroken by the passing of my beloved friend Deacon Thomas Contrades. On behalf of my family and the people of Kaua‘i, we send our heartfelt condolences to Tommy’s wife, Jackie, and the entire Contrades ‘Ohana. “Deacon Tom is a beacon of light that touched many lives. He was a true family man, community and business advocate, staunch volunteer, and a spiritual leader who guided and encouraged people’s spiritual journey. He is a testament to the power one person has to make a positive difference in the lives of others. “On a more personal note, I truly looked forward to my daily scripture readings from Deacon Tom that I will forever treasure and hold dear to my heart. I send my deepest aloha to the many co-workers, friends, and family he left behind.” Revered Deacon Thomas Patrick Contrades was appointed by Mayor Carvalho as an Executive Assistant to the Mayor, serving as the capital improvement projects manager from 2010 to 2012. He then served as a volunteer chaplain for the Kaua‘i Police Department from 2014 until his passing on Feb. 24, 2017. Throughout his 23 years as a business agent for the International Longshore and Warehouse Union (ILWU) Kaua‘i Division, Contrades served on several government boards and commissions, including: the Kaua‘i Planning Commission, the Hawaiian Homes Commission; and the State Land Use Commission. He also volunteered with the Boy Scouts of America, Hale ‘Opio, Kaua‘i Economic Opportunity, the Kaua‘i United Way, and Na Kupa‘a O Kuhio. Contrades was a Deacon for the Diocese of Honolulu assigned to St. Raphael Church in Kōloa, where his celebration of life will be held on Sat., March 4. Visitation will begin at 8 a.m. with services to follow at 9:30 a.m. ###
