Head-on collision in Kapa‘a results in fatality
KAPA‘A – An Anahola woman died from injuries sustained during a head-on crash that
occurred on the Kapa‘a Bypass Road on Tuesday afternoon.
Police have identified the victim as 72-year-old Lynette Lanning.
According to a preliminary investigation, a 21-year-old Kapa‘a man was heading north
on the Kapa‘a Bypass Road at approximately 4:30 p.m., when the Chevrolet pickup truck he
was driving apparently crossed the center line and struck an oncoming Mazda sedan. The crash
occurred south of Crossroads Christian Fellowship.
Lanning was the driver of the sedan and had a passenger in the front seat at the time of
the crash.
All three individuals involved in the crash were transported to Wilcox Hospital for medical
treatment.
The driver of the truck and the passenger of the sedan, a 44-year-old Anahola man, both
sustained non-life threatening injuries and were released from the hospital Tuesday night.
Lanning had to be extracted from her vehicle following the crash and was transported to
the hospital in critical condition, where she died later that night.
The south portion of the Kapa‘a Bypass Road, from the roundabout to the Wailua
entrance, was closed from 4:30 p.m. to approximately 8:10 p.m. to allow traffic investigators to
process the scene.
Police continue to investigate the cause of this crash.
