Kūhiō Highway in Keālia closed in both directions due to traffic crash
KEALIA – Kūhiō Highway remains closed in both directions, fronting St. Catherine
Cemetery in Keālia, due to a two-vehicle crash. Traffic is being diverted onto Mailihuna and
Kawaihau Roads until further notice.
According to a preliminary report, shortly before 9 a.m., a Nissan Cube was heading
southbound on Kūhiō Highway, when it crossed the center line and crashed into an oncoming
delivery truck.
The head-on collision has resulted in critical injuries. More details will be released as
information becomes available.
Traffic investigators remain at the scene to conduct a full investigation into the cause of
the crash. Once the on-scene investigation is complete, both vehicles will need to be towed
from the roadway and all debris will need to be cleared.
An exact timeline of when the road will reopen is not yet known, but it is anticipated that
this will be an extended closure of the highway. Motorists are reminded to heed the school zone
speed limits along Mailihuna and Kawaihau roads.
Updates will be given as information becomes available. For updates on the closure,
please call KPD’s automated road closure line at 241-1725 or follow the County of Kaua‘i
Facebook page at www.facebook.com/countyofkauai.
