Kaua‘i dispatchers recognized during National Public Safety
Telecommunicators Week, April 9 – 15, 2017
LĪHU'E – The Kaua‘i Police Department held a ceremony at KPD Headquarters on
Monday to recognize the department’s emergency dispatchers in honor of National Public
Safety Telecommunicators Week, April 9 through 15.
Attendees included Deputy Police Chief Michael Contrades and KPD officers and staff,
Council Chair Mel Rapozo and members of the County Council, and Police Commission Chair
Mary Hertog and members of the Kaua‘i Police Commission.
“Our dispatchers have excellent communications skills, are dedicated to public safety,
and are committed to professionalism,” stated Deputy Chief Michael Contrades. “Without them,
we would not be able to safeguard our community. While we should celebrate and applaud their
efforts all year long, this week was dedicated to them to recognize all that they do.”
The Kaua‘i Police Department employs 17 dispatchers, who dispatch appropriate
emergency services in response to crisis situations and are specially trained to offer life-saving
assistance over the phone when needed.
Each year, the second full week of April is dedicated to the men and women who serve
as public safety telecommunicators across the nation.
“Our dispatchers are truly special people who do a very difficult job and are worthy of our
gratitude,” added Deputy Chief Contrades.
