Managing Director OFFICE OF THE PROSECUTING ATTORNEY News Release For Immediate Release: April 5, 2017 JUSTIN KOLLAR, PROSECUTING ATTORNEY Tel (808) 241-1888 Fax (808) 241-1758 Life sentence for 2013 Omao murder Līhu‘e - Giovanni Lictawa Corpuz, 44, of Kōloa, was sentenced Wednesday to life in prison for the December 31, 2013 murder of an 88-year old Ōma‘o man. Corpuz had previously pled guilty to one count of murder in the second degree. He was apprehended in early 2014 in Taiwan while attempting to flee to the Philippines. Corpuz was apparently intoxicated by methamphetamine and had not slept for more than a week when he committed the murder. Fifth Circuit Judge Kathleen N.A. Watanabe handed down the sentence during an emotional hearing after hearing arguments from First Deputy Prosecuting Attorney Jennifer S. Winn and defense counsel Mark Zenger. Three of the victim’s children also addressed the court during the hearing. The Hawai‘i Paroling Authority will determine how much time Corpuz must serve before being eligible to apply for parole. Prosecuting Attorney Justin F. Kollar said, “We thank Detective Bernard Purisima and everyone who helped with this investigation for bringing this case to a successful resolution. Our thoughts and prayers are with the victim’s family as they continue to cope with this senseless murder.” ###
