Safadago indicted for Manslaughter in connection with death of 19-year-old
Kaua‘i woman
LIHU‘E – A Fifth Circuit Grand Jury on Wednesday indicted 46-year-old Cody M.
Safadago, who is believed to be originally of Washington state, on nine charges associated with
the death of 19-year old Kayla Huddy-Lemn. The Grand Jury added a charge of Manslaughter
to the eight charges for which Safadago was initially arrested.
The indictment alleges that on the night of April 27, Safadago committed the offense of
Manslaughter by recklessly causing the death of Huddy-Lemn. With sentencing enhancements,
Safadago faces the possibility of an indeterminate life sentence on that charge. He also faces
charges of first-degree Negligent Homicide and Leaving the Scene of an Accident Involving
Death, both class B felonies, Unauthorized Control of a Propelled Vehicle, a class C felony, and
other associated traffic-related charges including Operating a Vehicle Under the Influence of an
Intoxicant.
Safadago is scheduled to be arraigned on the Grand Jury indictment on Monday, May
15 in Circuit Court.
The Office of the Prosecuting Attorney also announced that it filed felony Theft and
misdemeanor Shoplifting charges against Safadago for an unrelated incident. In that case,
Safadago is alleged to have stolen Kahelelani bracelets worth more than $750 from Havaiki
Oceanic and Tribal Art, a shop in Hanalei, in early January of this year.
Trial is currently set for October 21 in that case. Due to his alleged criminal history,
Safadago faces a maximum possible 11 years of imprisonment for the charges.
