Managing Director KAUA‘I POLICE DEPARTMENT News Release For Immediate Release: May 17, 2016 DARRYL PERRY, CHIEF Tel (808) 241-1600 Fax (808) 241-1604 Kaua‘i Police Chief encourages motorists to drive safely and refrain from drinking and driving As the community prepares for graduation season and summer break, the Kaua'i Police Department is encouraging motorists to drive safely, and urging parents and the community to help prevent underage drinking. The department cautions the public that officers will be increasing enforcement efforts across the island, checking for those driving under the influence of intoxicants, and other traffic violations. “Adults are reminded that it is against the law to provide liquor to minors or to host underage drinking on their property,” stated Kaua‘i Police Chief Darryl Perry. “Parents, please speak to your teenage drivers about the dangers of underage drinking and driving under the influence. Also, reassure them that it’s okay to call home if they need help. Giving them options other than getting in a car with an intoxicated driver could save their life. It’s always better to get a late-night phone call from your child than a police officer.” There have been six traffic-related fatalities on Kaua‘i so far this year, and a total of eight in 2016. According to KPD, four of last year’s traffic fatalities involved drugs and/or alcohol. “By warning motorists of the increased traffic enforcement and vehicle checkpoints, we hope to prevent unsafe driving before it occurs,” added Chief Perry.” We all play a role in preventing traffic crashes and keeping youth safe. Driving responsibly could save your life or the life of someone you love.” ###
